Fever signals your immune system is fighting something. Knowing what causes it and how to manage symptoms helps you stay calm and act appropriately.

What is fever?

Fever is a temporary rise in body temperature that usually points to an infection or inflammation. The body raises its temperature to slow pathogens and help immune cells work better.

Factors that change body temperature

Common causes of fever

1. Infections

2. Inflammatory and autoimmune conditions

Diseases like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus cause inflammation that can raise temperature.

3. Heat-related illness

Heat exhaustion or heat stroke from prolonged high temperatures or heavy exertion can produce high body temperatures and needs urgent attention.

4. Medications and vaccines

Some drugs cause drug fevers. Vaccines sometimes produce a brief, mild fever as the immune system responds.

5. Other causes

Natural ways to reduce fever

1. Hydration

Fever increases fluid loss. Drink plain water, oral rehydration solutions, or mild herbal teas to replace fluids and electrolytes. Dehydration can make recovery harder.

2. Rest

Rest helps the immune system focus on clearing the infection. Aim for quiet, uninterrupted sleep and avoid strenuous activity until you recover.

3. Comfortable environment

Keep the room cool, wear lightweight clothes, and avoid heavy blankets. Dim lights and reduce noise to help sleep.

4. Cooling measures

Apply a cool, damp cloth to the forehead, wrists, or back of the neck to ease discomfort. A lukewarm bath or sponge bath cools the body gradually and safely.

For medicines, follow dosing instructions and check with a clinician for children under two months or if you’re unsure when to treat a fever with drugs like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

When to call a doctor

  • Infants younger than 3 months with any fever.
  • Children under 2 years with fever lasting more than 24 hours.
  • Fever above 104°F (40°C).
  • Severe symptoms: difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting, severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, rash, or seizure.
  • Fever that lasts more than 72 hours or recurs frequently.

Use common sense. If the person looks seriously ill, seek medical care rather than waiting for a number to change.

Simple actions—hydration, rest, a comfortable room, and cooling measures—cover most fevers at home. Keep a thermometer on hand, watch for warning signs, and contact healthcare if the fever meets any of the red-flag criteria above.
