High Blood Pressure: Causes, Signs, and What to Do

2020年9月19日

In most cases, high blood pressure will not show any symptoms. In fact, you might have high blood pressure and actually feel pretty good. This is why high blood pressure is so dangerous. High blood pressure is a silent killer, so you need to check yourself. It is much better for you to protect your health with a simple test instead of risking your health by ignoring it. Unfortunately, many people with high blood pressure don't even realize they have it. Others know they have it but fail to take medication because they don't feel sick.

High blood pressure develops slowly and starts affecting you without you even realizing it. You need to take precautions and manage the risks if you want to live a healthier and longer life. You need to know your numbers by measuring your blood pressure. This way, you will be in a position to make the necessary adjustments before things get out of hand. Recognizing your risk factors is essential because it will help you identify the positive changes you can make. Read on to learn more about high blood pressure and how you can manage it.

What causes high blood pressure?

You develop high blood pressure when the heart is forced to work harder to pump blood to the body. When blood flow meets resistance, arteries narrow and pressure rises. Persistent high pressure damages organs and raises risk of heart failure and stroke. Two main types of hypertension have different causes.

Primary hypertension

Primary, or essential, hypertension develops over time without a single identifiable cause. Most people with high blood pressure have this type. Factors that contribute include:

  • Physical changes — age-related changes in kidney function or blood vessels can alter fluid and salt balance, raising blood pressure.
  • Lifestyle and genetics — lack of physical activity, poor diet, and excess weight increase risk. Family history also matters; you may inherit a tendency toward higher blood pressure.

Secondary hypertension

Secondary high blood pressure results from another health problem. Common causes include chronic kidney disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and sleep apnea. Pregnancy, certain medications, and illegal drugs can also raise blood pressure.

How is high blood pressure diagnosed?

Healthcare professional measuring patient's blood pressure

The first step is getting your blood pressure checked. A cuff on the upper arm measures two numbers: systolic (pressure when the heart beats) and diastolic (pressure between beats). Normal is below 120/80 mm Hg. Stage 1 is systolic 130–139 or diastolic 80–89. Stage 2 is systolic 140 or higher or diastolic 90 or higher.

Because readings vary, doctors usually take multiple measurements over time before diagnosing hypertension. You may be asked to monitor at home with a validated device and share readings with your clinician.

Signs and symptoms

High blood pressure often produces no symptoms. If you wait for signs, damage can build up quietly. Extremely high blood pressure can cause symptoms, and some related findings deserve attention.

Blood spots in the eyes

Subconjunctival hemorrhages can appear in people with high blood pressure. Persistent or repeated eye bleeding should prompt an eye exam to check for optic nerve damage.

Dizziness

Dizziness, loss of coordination, or sudden imbalance can be signs of stroke, and high blood pressure is a leading risk factor. Intense sweating or nervousness can occur with very high pressure. Get medical attention if you or someone else has sudden neurological symptoms.

Facial flushing

Flushing happens when facial blood vessels dilate. Triggers include sun, wind, spicy food, alcohol, heat, and stress. Flushing does not mean you have high blood pressure, but it can temporarily raise readings.

Depression and anxiety

Persistent anxiety or depression can raise blood pressure indirectly by promoting unhealthy coping behaviors such as excessive drinking or smoking. Treating mental health conditions reduces those risks and supports better physical health.

What high blood pressure does to your body

High blood pressure damages artery walls over time. Tears form, and bad cholesterol collects at those sites, making arteries narrower. Reduced blood flow harms tissues and organs and increases chances of irregular heartbeats, heart attack, and heart failure. Heart failure means the heart cannot pump well enough; you may notice swelling in the legs and abdomen, shortness of breath, and fatigue.

What you can do now

  • Get measured. Buy a validated home cuff or see a clinician and track readings regularly.
  • Make lifestyle changes: aim for regular activity, a balanced diet lower in sodium, and maintain a healthy weight.
  • Follow your clinician's plan. If prescribed medication, take it as directed and report side effects.
  • Treat other conditions that raise pressure, such as sleep apnea, diabetes, or kidney disease.
  • Address mental health. Treating anxiety or depression helps lower risk behaviors that raise blood pressure.

If you have questions about readings or treatment options, talk with your healthcare provider. Monitoring and early action make a real difference.
